DEFENDERS OF THE COAST

Defenders of the Coast, a grassroots cleanup effort based in Ocean Shores, has removed more than 4.5 tons of trash from highways, streets, trails and beaches during the last four months according to a press release.

Defenders of the Coast has organized dozens of cleanup events since its inception. According to their Facebook page, which has nearly 300 members, Defenders of the Coast is “a community-driven organization dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of our coastal home.”

“We’re not just picking up trash — we’re picking up the pieces of our shared responsibility,” said CJ Ripley, president of Defenders of the Coast, via press release. “We love this town. We love this coast. And we’re proving that when people come together for something bigger than themselves, real change can happen.”

Since the start of the new year, Defenders of the Coast has conducted multiple large-scale cleanup events, while partnering with local businesses, and mobilizing area residents with hundreds of volunteer hours logged by residents.

Defenders of the Coast participates in major cleanups, including the Ocean Shores annual spring cleanup, while providing hands-on support throughout the city. The group has also collaborated with city and state agencies to ensure the safe and responsible disposal of waste.

The group is on a mission to “clean up the coastline, inspire others, and build bridges within the community regardless of background or beliefs. "The next Defenders of the Coast clean-up event is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 starting at 9 a.m. The Ocean Shores Convention Center is the rally point.
